Competition News Bulletin - August 2017

Some highlights of this issue are as under:
  • Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposes penalty on Hyundai (India) Ltd for resale price maintenance and tie-in - The CCI imposed a penalty of Rs. 87 Crore on Hyundai Motor (India) Pvt. Ltd. for establishing a “Discount Control Mechanism” and for mandating its dealers to purchase lubricants only from designated vendors in violation of Section 3(4)(e) and Section 3(4)(a) of the Act.
  • CCI dismisses allegations of abuse of dominance against OLA - The CCI dismissed allegations of predatory pricing made by Fast Track Call Cab Pvt. Ltd and Meru Travel Solutions against OLA upon finding that OLA was not dominant in the relevant market of radio taxi services.
  • CCI dismisses allegations of abuse of dominant position against Reliance Jio - The CCI dismissed allegations against Reliance Jio that it was abusing its dominant position by offering free services, holding that Reliance Jio was not in a dominant position in the market for provision of wireless telecommunication.
  • European Commission fines Google €2.42 billion for abuse – The European Commission has imposed a penalty of €2.42 billion on Google for abusing its dominant position as a search engine, by giving an illegal advantage to its comparison shopping service.
